Supporting Representation - Amina Yu

OBRF understands the barriers that individuals and families can face in their new localities in Canada. One of these barriers is representation. For someone to become a representative, they must not only be a high achiever, but they also must be invited and supported by others. If the new representative identifies with intersectionalities that are underrepresented, this representation catalyzes new possibilities, courage, and incentives for the underrepresented community to pursue further representation. OBRF engages with, works alongside, and supports underrepresented communities in their self development and community development journeys. Amina Yu is one of many examples. Amina Yu represented Canada at the ITF World Championships in Croatia.

Nurturing Trust - Listening Circles

OBRF, in collaboration with several local communities, launched Listening Circles, an initiative designed to build deep trust across diverse groups and strengthen shared resilience. Through honest, respectful, and educational conversations and seminars, we created space for people to listen, learn, and connect. In the midst of local challenges, further catalyzed by global events, OBRF remains committed to nurturing a community where everyone feels included and safe. This project, so far, has targeted 255 local leaders, community organizers, change-makers, and advocates. This project has been evolving and including even more local communities.

Fostering Belonging - Islamic Heritage Month Declaration

A sense of belonging is one of the strongest drivers of human nature. Fostering belonging requires work at every level to create environments where communities feel seen, acknowledged, and respected—both now and over the long term. On October 30, 2019, the Province of British Columbia declared the month of October as Islamic Heritage Month. From our community’s side, the declaration celebration project was led by Br. Mustafa Abousaleh, current President of OBRF, under the delegation of Imam Ismail Nur and in collaboration with Br. Yousif Hamad, current Treasurer of OBRF, along with many other community members. During the celebration at the BC Legislature Building, Sr. Agartu Ali delivered a beautiful poem, and young Br. Hassan Mohammad delivered the Athan (call to prayer). At OBRF, this legacy of fostering belonging continues.
